Keeping Kids Entertained

Isolation, lockdown and social distancing might seem like a dream to some but for parents, it can be a stressful and anxious situation.

Our days won’t be spent on the couch with Netflix and we won’t have time to take up a new hobby. We have little people to entertain. Little people who don’t understand why we are stuck at home!

And, any parent will tell you that we mostly rely on playdates, trips to the playground and catch-ups to keep us sane.

So, with play dates, trips to the Zoo and in some cases even trips to the park out of the question – what are you doing to keep your kids busy and entertained?

Here are some things we will be doing which might help with keeping kids entertained:

Making Play-Doh

Ok, so this one we probably won’t be doing as often as we’d like due to many Australians panic buying pantry staples such as flour leaving virtually nothing on the supermarket shelves!

But every now and then we’ll be making a batch of Play-Doh for all kids to enjoy.

Here’s our go-to recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar
  • 1 cup flour
  • Food colouring

Instructions

  1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food colouring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
  2. Remove from heat and add flour.
  3. Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don’t have it on hand.
  4. Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.

Slime

Another favourite in our house is slime.

There are many different recipes for longer-lasting slime, some of these recipes require products that you might not readily have at home.

We use cornflour mixed with food colouring and water, it doesn’t last long but does the job and is super easy to clean up afterwards!

Shaving cream fun

We have a water table/trough that gets used for many different outside activities. Slime is one of them but something else that’s always a hit is shaving cream. You can also add an educational element to this one as well by having youngsters practice writing letters and numbers.

Another good idea for a water table or trough is mud play! And if the weather is warm enough, hose the kids off when they’re done for added fun.

Board games

Not all gaming needs to be done online. Pull out an old fashioned board game for some great family fun. Some of our favourites are Operation, Game of Life and Monopoly.

Screen Time

How much time your kids spend on screens is a personal choice. I allow unlimited screentime – within reason! If it’s raining and we can’t venture outside then they’ll spend more time on screens. Same with if we’ve had a late night and early morning and they’re tired. On a normal day, many of the children will get bored with the screens very quickly and move on to something else.

Something my 5-year-old and I enjoy is watching some family channels on YouTube. Check out The Hodgepodge 8 and Calvin and Benson, these are our two favourites. Mr 3 enjoys BabyBus (drives me insane though!!).

Mr 5 is also a bit of a movie buff so we’ll often sit down and watch a movie on slow afternoons.

Walks in nature or bike rides

It might not be possible for everyone to get out for a walk or bike ride but it’s a great activity that does not require contact with others or equipment and it gets you out of the house!

Self-care for parents

And, how about you – parents and carers, what are you doing to keep yourself sane? I haven’t had time to think about that one yet!

Ok, so now it’s over to you – what tips, ideas or even links to resources or other blog posts do you have to keep kids entertained while stuck at home.

And how are you handling it yourself?
