Mum Bloggers and Business Owners are in a league of our own. Many of us juggle kids, life, blogs/businesses and some also hold down a 9-5 job. It’s time to celebrate some of these beautiful women.
Today, I sit down with and learn more about Kathleen from the blog Life By Kathleen.
Life by Kathleen is a lifestyle blog that focuses on progress through saving time, saving money, along with better or different ways to do things. Recently on her blog, Kathleen has been opening up about her mental health, particularly during infertility and motherhood.
Why did you start blogging?
I originally started my blog to make some extra money. I saw all these other bloggers online making a little money on the side, some even making enough to cover a full-time income. And I thought I could do that too. But 5 years on, I haven’t made any money. But I keep going because I feel like I am making a difference. If someone finds inspiration, or reads a post and thinks “same”, or it just makes them think a little differently, I feel like I’ve made a difference.
What is the hardest thing about balancing your blog with your life?
The main thing I struggle with is motivation. I’m quite results driven, so when I don’t see results I lose the motivation to keep going, and this goes for many parts of my life; health, finances, my blog, career, parenthood, relationships.
What makes blogging worthwhile?
It makes it all worthwhile knowing that I have helped someone. I was petrified of my friends finding out about my blog. But now they read it and can relate to so many things.
What does a typical day look like in the Life of Kathleen?
I generally set my alarm for 7am during the week but sometimes my daughter wakes me before then. My daughter and I get ready together, eat breakfast, get dressed, brush our teeth and hair, and we are out the door to childcare around 830am. Then I am off to work as an Accounts Manager (two days a week) at a digital marketing agency.
I spend my lunch breaks reading, working on my blog (writing/researching) or networking on social media for my blog.
After work, I pick up my daughter, prepare and eat dinner then clean up while my husband bathes our daughter.
Once my daughter is in bed (and staying in bed) I get to work on the computer. Either continuing some work from my day job or working on my blog. While I’m working I like to listen to a Spotify playlist called Focus, its gentle music that is great as background noise. When I am having trouble keeping my attention on the task, I use the Pomodoro method, which is 25 minutes of work then a 5-minute break.
I’ve set the screen time limits on my phone for 10pm to 7am, so I usually finish up on the computer around 10. In additions to this, I use Night Shift setting on my phone (8pm to 8am) and computer (sunrise and sunset), which changes the screen to red light, rather than blue light. Then I have a shower and jump into bed, listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks while I fall asleep.
Life is definitely busy for Kathleen, one of those superstars who holds down a job as well as a successful blog! Thank you for contributing to this series, Kathleen.
